We are proud to announce that we have signed a
Letter of Agreement with the Center for Multicultural Human Services
(CMHS). This is our third strategic investment, joining Heads Up,
signed in late summer and well into its planning phase, and the Child
and Family Network Centers, signed earlier this month.
CMHS, located in Falls Church, VA, provides a multitude
of mental health, social and educational services to multicultural
children and families, many of whom are immigrants and refugees
to Northern Virginia. Dr. Dennis Hunt founded the organization ten
years ago and has assembled an impressive, professional, multicultural
staff that speaks 28 languages. The organization wants to increase
its reach to the growing population of refugees and immigrants in
the area and to provide training to other jurisdictions so they
can do a better job of helping these populations adapt to life in
America and succeed.
VPP Partner Selma Gomez Orr, a Cuban American, says,
“ My passion for this organization comes from the fact that
I too am a child of a refugee family. I am so moved by the work
they do at CMHS. They reach out to these children, some of whom
come from places where there is war and torture, and help them to
have aspirations, connect to opportunities and thrive.”
Following the model of our first two investments,
VPP is providing funding and support to help CMHS with an initial
planning phase, which we expect will begin in February. The planning
phase is expected to produce detailed strategic and business plans
upon which a subsequent long-term strategic investment will be based.
Please join me in congratulating Selma on the excellent
work she has done in bringing home VPP's third investment in the
National Capital area.
My best, Mario
